Can Feedback Help You To Find Work You Love?

Using feedback to find work you love

I had an exciting discussion about feedback with yesterday’s interviewee. When I’ve thought about feedback in the past, I’ve believed I should collate that feedback into something that I should apply to every interaction I have. I have believed that any feedback is directly aimed at how I interact with the world period. Rarely have I considered it in the context of only that interaction.

However, one theory of personality, by Walter Mischel, suggests that every interaction we have brings out different elements of ourselves based on who we are speaking to and the scenario. If you consider that you are a multilayered human, and even if those nuances from interaction to interaction may be small, you might wish to be cautious about relating that feedback, good or bad, to a new scenario with different people and different circumstances.

Now consider you are trying out working in a new field, or a new office, or a new country, or anywhere you’ve not worked before. What feedback are you getting from the people around you? Is that feedback affecting your view of whether that area of work is a place you can find joy or a place you will shrivel to a lesser version of your self?

Sometimes, we let others dictate, often without realizing their influence, the paths we choose to take in our careers. If you stop to consider what you truly want from your career, would you make different choices?

Happy Holidays!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE! (IT FILLS ME WITH JOY THAT I’VE BEEN ABLE TO ADOPT THIS HOLIDAY. IT’S THE PERFECT BLEND OF FAMILY TIME, PREPARATION FOR CHRISTMAS, AND TO GIVE THANKS FOR WHAT WE ALREADY HAVE RATHER THAN WHAT ELSE WE CAN GIVE AND RECEIVE. IT’S WONDERFUL TO GIVE AND GET, BUT IT’S ALSO WONDERFUL TO APPRECIATE WHAT IS.

I HAVE OODLES OF INTERVIEWS OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS, SO I’LL SEE YOU ALL ON MONDAY FOR ANOTHER UPDATE!

If you’re someone who loves your work, or you know someone else who does, check out the Red Ponder #LoveToWork projects and let me know if you’d like to take part! I’d love to hear from you!
